McTeague ‘honoured’ to win again in Pickering Scarborough East

For Liberal incumbent Dan McTeague, being returned by Ottawa again by his constituents was “a real honour.”

The Pickering Scarborough East winner had polled 48.3% of the votes with 30 polls remaining by midnight on Tuesday, ahead of Conservative George Khouri’s 33% and Andrea Moffat of the NDP with 10%.

Dan McTeague and wife Daniela Rossi celebrate after another win in the Pickering Scarborough-East riding. “When I first ran in 1993 I thought I’d be lucky to win one election,” McTeague said. “But six elections later, I’m still very touched.”

He added that his constituents come first and because of them, he will continue to work even harder, including a hoped-for meeting with Jim Flaherty, the finance minister, in the coming months to discuss some of his recommendations made while sitting on the industry committee.

“Durham has been left out [of the economy] and east Toronto has been left out, and I plan on holding the government accountable,” he said.

Despite the loss, Khouri wasn’t ready to concede anything.

“I have a warning for Mr. McTeague,” he said. “Your glass jaw is going to shatter next time, I promise you.”

Khouri said he was “recharged” by his local organization’s commitment.

“I worked my heart out for them and it’s too bad we came on the wrong end.”

Moffatt was pleased with the NDP’s progress.

“We have connected with a lot of young people, a lot of people that previously weren’t involved in politics,” she said.

“It was all about engaging them and getting them involved and to really work on the things we have talked about in the campaign, it’s about not falling off on those issues and really keeping up with them.”

She says even though this has been very challenging and she is tired, she isn’t going anywhere just yet.

“I run because I want to make a difference. At the point I am thinking I will be running provincially again for sure,” Moffat says.
