Election 2008: Whitby-Oshawa stays Conservative blue

Following his re-election in the Whitby-Oshawa riding Tuesday night, the federal finance minister spoke about Canada’s economy and the global credit crisis.

Jim Flaherty won the riding handily defearting his closes rival, Liberal Brent Fullard by more than 15,000 votes.  Flaherty finished with 30,604 votes to Fullard’s 15,470.  During his victory rally at Whitby Legion hall, Flaherty was escorted to the stage by former Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Glenn Healy playing the Scottish bagpipes.

He addressed his supporter and referred to current economic conditions.

“Canada is better positioned than most to weather this economic storm,” Flaherty said.  ” We must create an environment that rewards hard work, encourages growth and improves our quality of life.”

During his speech Flaherty also said that he promises that the Conservatives will deliver a balanced budget and a business environment that would attract global investers.

“We must be bold and innovative to stay ahead to the curve when dealing with growing uncertainty in the global economy,” Flaherty said.

Flaherty assured voters continued support tto traditional industries in the area including a $40 million in the Oshawa plant to build a new hybrid car.

“The W hybrid care built in the car plant on the flex line is the future of General Motors,” he said.

Although Fullard finished in a distant second place, members of the media at Flaherty’s rally felt Fullard’s residence outside the region could have cost him.
