Kingston Road residents file class action suits

Residents of 3650 Kingston Rd. are still displaced after an electrical explosion, which happened more than two weeks ago. On May 31st, it was announced that the residents would be filing a class action suit against Toronto Hydro.

One resident, Dolly Andrews has been moved three times since the explosion and is glad that she and other residents are taking action.

On the night of the explosion, Andrews was woken up in the middle of the night by the alarm that indicated an evacuation.

The police and fire department appeared on the scene as normal procedure; however they stayed longer than normal.

“We never thought we were going to be away for so long,” Andrews said.

Andrews has been away much longer than she anticipated and still hasn’t been told when she’ll be able to move back home. This has created several problems for her.

After staying at a community center for a couple of days, residents were told to contact their insurance companies. Andrews was informed that her policy would only cover her hotel stay for two weeks. Like many other residents, she has been displaced in more ways than one. She has to buy all of her meals because there isn’t much place to store and cook food and still doesn’t have all of her clothing her apartment.

“All they’re [Toronto Hydro] saying is a couple more weeks,” Andrews said. “We had to get that from them because nobody would tell us anything.”

The group of residents along with the attorneys of Sutts, Strosberg LLP and Falconer Charney LLP are suing in hopes to gain compensation for the time and money the residents have lost due to the explosion. She stands by her decision and feels that it is only right.

“I feel very good about it because what happened to us is not right,” Andrews said. “It’s our home and they’ve been treating us very badly.”

According to Andrews, one good thing has come out of the explosion.

“It’s great to see how we all just stuck together in this time.”
