Lopes-Schliep’s journal stolen at worlds

Priscilla Lopes-Schliep’s season didn’t end the way she wanted, and it had nothing to do with her performance on the track.

During last Saturday’s World Athletics final in Greece, someone went through the former East Scarborough resident’s track bag and took her training journal.

Lopes-Schliep finished fourth in the 100-metre hurdles with a time of 12.61 seconds. Brigitte Foster-Hylton of Jamaica came away with the gold while Pickering’s Perdita Felicien finished in fifth.

After the race, Lopes-Schliep discovered everything but her journal was in her bag.

“The book was in the back part under my clothes,” she told the Canadian Press.  “They knew what they were looking for. They didn’t want anything else.”

Kris Mychasiw, the agent for the hurdler, wasn’t happy either.

“A training log is an athlete’s bible, it outlines absolutely everything in terms of workouts from the rest to the recovery,” Mychasiw said. “It’s a shame that someone took it.”

Despite her anger over the situation, the 2008 Beijing Olympics bronze medalist can find some humor in the situation.

“I guess I’m doing something right, somebody wants to steal my workouts,” Lopes-Schliep said. “Somebody obviously feels threatened and wants to know what I’m doing …  but they’ll always be a year behind.”

Not only did she use the journal to chronicle her training, but also her aunt’s ongoing struggles with diabetes.

“I like to be able to look year to year what I’m doing, say, a week before Melrose [Games in New York], I can look back and see what I was doing,” Lopes-Schliep said.

“It’s just neat to see the progress. I won’t be able to see it this year, unfortunately.”
