Varsity Blues second half woes continue

The tandem of quarterback Jansen Shrubb and wide-receiver Drew Meerveld wasn’t enough to get the University of Toronto Varsity Blues their second win of the season.

McMaster Marauders offence took over in the second half for a 21-3 win over Toronto.

Boxscore: Varsity Blues at Marauders

Before the game, Varsity Blues head coach Greg DeLaval told the Toronto Observer the game would come down to special teams and it did.

Toronto got into scoring position early and often, but was only able to come away with three points in the first quarter.

Kicker Andrew Lomasney missed two field goals in the first half. Those two misses caught the attention of his coach and in two other opportunities, DeLaval decided to try to go for it on third and long twice.

Shrubb went 20 for 47 for 250 yards. Early in the second half, he went out with a rib injury, but only missed one play.

Walter Cariazo took six hand-offs for 26 yards and Jonathan Wright ran once for 15 yards.

Meerveld caught 11 balls for 153 yards. The next Toronto receiver, Paul de Pass, had three grabs for 42 yards.

For Mac, Kyle Quinlan went 19 for 30 for 275 yards. Running back Jordan Kozina ran 14 times for 63 yards and also made two receptions for 50.

Brad Fochesato caught three balls for 36 yards and Sean Fahey nabbed a pair for 44.

The play that really put the game out of reach came with 7:32 left, when Quinlan threw a 21-yard strike to a wide-open Matt Peressini for a 20-3 lead.

McMaster only had a 6-3 lead into the third quarter but upped the margin thanks to a 51-yard pass to Fahey that put the Marauders into scoring position, followed by a score 10 yard scamper by running back Joseph Nemet that made it 13-3 with the convert.

First half a battle

In the second quarter, the Marauders took a 6-3 lead off of two Andrew Waugh field goals. The first one was a 26-yard boot early in the frame.

Late in the half, a roughing the kicker penalty on Toronto gave the Mauraders a second chance. They drove 80 yards down the field and Waugh capped the drive with a 22-yard field goal.

The Blues dominated the first quarter, but only had three points to show for their efforts.

Throughout the frame, Toronto’s offence was able to move the ball with ease out gaining the Marauders 102 yards to 26.

But the lone points of the quarter came from a 40-yard field goal from Lomasney.
