Hollingsworth in medal contention after first two runs in women’s skeleton

Canadian Mellisa Hollingsworth is third after the opening two runs of women’s skeleton took place on Thursday at the Whistler Sliding Centre in Vancouver.

Hollingsworth, who was seen as a favourite going in, started off slowly finishing in fifth place with a time of 54.18 after the opening run.

She improved in the second run posting a time of 54.17 to place third overall and put herself in contention for a medal with two runs remaining.

Fellow Canadian Amy Gough started strongly posting a time of 54.14 in the first run and sat in second place just 0.31 behind Great Britain’s Amy Williams.

Unfortunately, Gough’s second run was not as successful as her first as she posted a time of 54.78 and dropped to seventh place overall going into the final two runs.

Williams leads the event through two runs after a combined time of 1:47.96. She has a 0.30 advantage over Germany’s Kerstin Szymkowiak, who sits in second.

Michelle Kelly of Canada finished 13th in both runs with a combined time of 1:50.22.

Japan’s Nozomi Komuro was disqualified because she did not have a required FIBT sticker on her sled and will not race in the final two runs.

The opening run was delayed for almost an hour as Olympic officials tried to give the ice more time to settle in and harden.

The final two runs will take place Friday, February 19 at 3:45 and 4:55 PST respectively.
