Norway’s Emil Hegle Svendsen golden in men’s 20km biathlon

Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway won gold in Men’s 20km Biathlon on Thursday with a time of 48:22.5 at Whistler Olympic Park.

In an interesting twist, Norway’s Ole Einar Bjoerndalen and Belarus’ Sergey Novikov both finished with the exact same time of 48:32.0 and were awarded silver medals.

The 36 year old Bjoerndalen, won his 10th medal all-time for Norway in the biathlon and his heir apparent in the sport seems to have been found in 26 year old Svendsen.

Lone Canadian Jean-Philippe Le Guellec, who finished 48th in the individual at the 2006 Games in Turin, finished 13th with a time of 50:47.1.

Christoph Sumann of Austria, who was ranked first in the individual biathlon World Cup came into the event as the favourite but finished a disappointing eighth.
