Read qualifies for Saturday’s large hill final

Stefan Read is the lone Canadian that will participate in Saturday’s large hill ski jumping final after qualification was held Friday.

It is a bright spot for the Canadian ski jumping team after no Canadians qualified for the normal hill final held earlier in the Winter Games.

The Edmonton native was 36th after the qualification run, with the top 40 jumpers qualifying for the final.

Reid qualified with a total score of 102.9, that combines distance points with judges points.  Noriaki Kasai of Japan was the top qualifier with a combined score of 143.5.

Switzerland’s Simon Ammann, the gold-medal winner of the normal hill ski jump, pre-qualified for the large hill final as a result of being ranked in the top-10 in World Cup standings.

Canadians Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes, of Toronto, Trevor Morrice, from Calgary, and 18-year-old Eric Mitchell failed to qualify.
