Fraud on the move in Toronto

Police are urging Torontonians to be cautious when hiring moving companies, after a recent spike in fraudulent moving-company incidents.

Fraudulent moving companies are quoting low costs to move possessions, police report.  Once a contract is agreed upon the client signs it, without a proper read-through. Halfway through the move, the company increases the fare.  If clients refuse to pay, their possessions are dumped on the street or taken to a storage facility.

Police advise residents to be wary of rates that seem too good to be true. Among their advice:

  • Use the referrals of friends and family or check the Better Business Bureau to see if the company has complaints filed against it.
  • Thoroughly read the contract before signing and make copies prior to moving date.
  • If you are uncomfortable with the terms do not sign the contract, as you have the right to refuse services.

Those with information about fraudulent moving companies are asked to contact Toronto Police at 416-808-2222 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.
