D.J. Boldin

The Toronto Argonauts landed a Boldin – it just wasn’t Anquan.

On Tuesday, the club announced that it had added wide reciever D.J. Boldin to the practice roster.

D.J. is the younger brother of Anquan, the three-time pro-bowl receiver of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens.

He attended training camp with the Montreal Alouettes earlier this season and had a brief stint in the NFL with the Detroit Lions back in 2009 after going undrafted coming out U.S. college.

The hardship he’s faced in his young career has not kept him down.

“I’m not even close to giving up. I got plenty of years of football left in me,” Boldin told the Toronto Sun. “I talk to [Anquan] all the time. He’s my mentor. My inspiration. When things don’t go so well he keeps my head up.”

The encouragement D.J. has received to keep playing has afforded him the opportunity to play for the Argos, a prospect he relishes.

“Honestly, I guess it was God,” he said. “I got cut by Montreal after [training camp and] was just working out at home when my agent called and said Toronto wanted me to come up.”

Before playing professionally, Boldin had a good college career playing for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, highlighted by a first team all-ACC senior season in 2008 where he had 81 catches for 848 yards with three touchdowns.

This is the second time the Boatmen have a player with a more famous older brother in the NFL.

Former Toronto quarterback Damon Allen, who played for the Argos between 2003-2007, is the younger brother of Pro Football Hall of Famer Marcus Allen.

Doug Flutie, another former Argos pivot between 1996-1997, is the older sibling of former Hamilton Tiger-Cats wideout Darren Flutie.

Both brothers spent some time in the NFL, Darren in 1988 with the San Diego Chargers while Doug played for eight seasons with the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots.
