Glenn De Baeremaeker easily holds onto Ward 38

Glenn De Baeremaeker won a landslide victory in Ward 38, beating his main opponent Glenn Middelton by 60 per cent of the vote.

He ran on a platform of improving transit, speeding up road repairs and preserving services while keeping taxes low, protecting green space and improving safety.

There were four other candidates vying for the seat: Middleton, Kirk Jensen, Tushar Shah and Sandip Vora.

De Baeremaeker, who is known for his environmental activism, rides his bike to city hall from his Scarborough home almost everyday.

He supported Joe Pantalone for mayor, while Middleton, supported Rob Ford.

Before he became a city councillor in 2003, De Baeremaeker helped conserve Rouge Valley during the late 1980s and later worked to protect the Oak Ridges Moraine from development.

During the past four years, De Baeremaeker was the chair of the Toronto’s public works and infrastructure committee, sat on the executive committee, as well as the Toronto Zoo’s management board.

He was elected to a second term in 2006, winning 61.9 per cent of the ballots with 8,585 votes, enough to beat Shah, who trailed at 1,330.
