Rob Ford announced as Toronto mayor

Early favourite Rob Ford has been declared the new mayor of Toronto with almost 50 per cent of total votes.

“This is a surreal feeling, Rob Ford is a tremendous guy,” said Paige Macphereson, social media co-ordinator to Ford. “He really deserves it, and I’m so happy for him. This is an election about change. Toronto spoke and they want change.”

Major news outlets were already calling it a win for Ford just minutes after polls closed at 8 pm.

“This is fantastic, everybody said it was neck-and-neck,” Ford supporter Orest Teply said . “I walked in just after 8 and he had already won. I don’t know about his electronic polls, but I think it’s clear the city wants Rob Ford.”

Ford’s fellow candidates make up a smaller percentage of the polls. George Smitherman follows with around 30 per cent of total votes and Joe Pantalone has only 11 per cent of the votes, as of one hour after polls closed.
