Ryder scores in OT, ties Bruins-Habs series 2-2

Michael Ryder scored twice, including the game winner 1:59 into overtime, to lift the Boston Bruins to a 5-4 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.

During a 3-on-1 breakaway, Rich Peverley fired wide and Chris Kelly cycled the puck over to an open Ryder, who buried it past his former team.

With the win, the Bruins tied the best-of-seven series 2-2 heading into Game 5 on Saturday in Boston.

Kelly had a goal and two assists while Andrew Ference and Patrice Bergeron also scored for Boston. Tim Thomas made 34 saves.

Carey Price stopped 30 shots, Michael Cammalleri had a goal and two assists and Brent Sopel, Andrei Kostitsyn and P.K. Subban also scored for Montreal.

BOXSCORE

With the score tied 3-3 at the start of the third, Bergeron hooked James Wisniewski 32 seconds into the period to give Montreal the man advantage. On the ensuing power play, Subban fired high past Thomas, who barely flinched as it sailed into the net and put Montreal ahead 4-3 at 1:39.

But Boston battled back hard late in the game. Peverley put the puck on net and Kelly shot it under Price at 13:42 to tie the game, 4-4.

Montreal came out firing on all cylinders during the first period, outshooting Boston 15-8 in the opening frame and taking a 1-0 lead.

David Desharnais controlled the puck behind the net and passed it to an open Sopel, who fired a shot from the point under Thomas’ arm at 8:13.

Lars Eller took the first penalty 14:24 into the game but Boston could not even get a shot on net and the team fell to 0-for-12 in the series on the power play.

Ryder put Boston on the board, after receiving a cross-ice pass from Tomas Kaberle and snapping a shot over Price’s left shoulder 2:13 into the second and tied the game 1-1.

Montreal went ahead with two goals 55 seconds apart as Cammalleri scored during a frenzy in front of Thomas and Kostitsyn made it 3-1 when he drove hard to the net and jammed home a Tomas Plekanec pass on a 2-on-1 at 7:47.

Boston coach Claude Julien called a timeout and the momentum shifted the other way. Ference came in off the blue-line and fired a knuckle puck that fooled Price on his glove side at 9:59 to pull Boston within one, 3-2. The Boston defenceman then flipped the crowd the middle finger and Ference could be fined by the league for his action.

The Bruins tied the game 3-3 when Mark Recchi sent the puck in deep to Brad Marchand, who shovelled it over to Bergeron in front of the net and he fired it in as Price went down.

Notes: Neither team has won a game at home this series … Jeff Halpern returned to the Canadiens lineup after missing the final four games of the regular season and the first three games of the post-season due to an undisclosed injury. Halpern played on the third line with Eller and Travis Moen, taking the place of Benoit Pouliot, who was a healthy scratch.
