Colts soccer looking to change direction

Centennial Colts men’s soccer team is off to an 0-1 start to the season, but even the loss brings some optimism going forward.

After being shutout 2-0 at the hands of the Seneca Sting on Tuesday, one might wonder where any positives can be found, but coach Julian Carr sees some.

“It was a tough loss obviously and there’s clearly a lot of work to be done still,” Carr told the Toronto Observer about his club’s first loss. “I’m disappointed in how the team played. We did some things right but I expect better.

“We just need to realize what we did wrong and change those things, while continuing to do what we feel we do well.”

Carr, a fifth-year coach of the team, has seen his share of struggles over the years as the Colts have yet to land a playoff berth during his tenure.

Centennial’s team competes in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association’s East Region, a difficult division to compete in, but with a season that has each team playing just eight games before playoffs commence, Carr knows the importance of every match.

“I know we can play better than what we showed,” Carr said. “But it’s just one game and we need to move forward and focus on winning one game at a time if we want any chance at the playoffs or a winning season.”

Unfortunately for Carr and the rest of the Colts’ squad, their next match up isn’t any easier as they travel to Peterborough, Ont., on Oct 4 to take on a 2-0 Fleming Knights team that holds a distinct offensive advantage, scoring six goals in two games while Centennial remains scoreless.

However, the coaching staff feels there is a new aura surrounding the Colts, one that will eventually convert into wins.

“I feel like there’s a different mood or mindset coming from this year’s team,” Carr said. “They don’t want to get used to the feeling of losing any more than [the coaches] do, so hopefully they are ready and willing to work hard and not let the loss get to them.”
