Liberals out front in Ontario vote

Polls across most of Ontario have just closed for the province’s 40th general election.

Early returns show the Liberals in the lead and edging close to majority territory in Ontario’s provincial Parliament, leading in 50 seats. The Progressive Conservatives were leading in 33 while the NDP appeared to be leading in 11 ridings.

Elections Ontario meanwhile reported a total of 624,958 voters took advantage of advanced polls, which represents an increase of over 27 per cent from 2007. Advanced polls opened the day after the election call on Sept. 8 and closed on Oct. 1.
