St. Dunstan craft sale ‘not all about making money’

Arts and crafts lovers united once again at St. Dunstan of Canterbury Anglican Church on March 23 for their Annual Spring Sale.

The sale first started more than 20 years ago at the church, located at 56 Lawson Rd. To this day, it’s still going strong.

Sheila Torres, who has been a member of the church since it was first built, is part of the crafts group that meets every Monday. Torres said her favourite part of the sale is the visitors.

“It’s always fun to get together and see a lot of people that we don’t see very often,” Torres said.

Norma Campbell, co-ordinator of the craft group at the church, said the Spring Sale is usually very successful. Last year, they brought in roughly $3,000, according to Campbell, with profits going directly to the church.

“We are allowed to choose how we want to spend the money,” Campbell said. “We’ve bought a lot of things for the church over the years.”

Last year, St. Dunstan made nearly $11,000 from a variety of different sales, including the Spring and Christmas Sales. Campbell said the church recently purchased new appliances for its kitchen with the profits.

So far this year, the hottest items at the church are curly scarves, hand made by the craft group’s members. Campbell said people have constantly approached her about them.

“In the last couple of weeks, I’ve sold $900 worth of scarves,” Campbell said. “That’s without the sale.”

In addition to scarves, the sale also sees numerous other crafts. Beth MacDonald, a member of both the church and its craft group, has been making jewelry for nearly six years.

“I just love working with beads and putting different colours together,” MacDonald said. “I think it’s the creativity in it that I really enjoy.”

Although the sale is a good fundraiser, Campbell believes profit is not the first priority.

“It’s not all about making money,” Campbell said. “It’s just showing people what’s out there… and socializing.”
