Manu’s weekly NFL picks

The National Football League and sports gambling are an inseparable union that generates billions of dollars worldwide. For those of us that can’t make the weekly trip down south to Las Vegas, we gladly make a donation to our Provincial Government via ProLine, and maybe even make a few bucks the odd week.

Without further ado, as a football enthusiast who regularly compiles spreadsheets and injury reports prior to the week’s games, I will be making my weekly picks ATS (Against The Spread) right here, exposing my losses and bragging about my wins. You are free to take my recommendations and perhaps we can laugh our ways all the way to the bank.

Home Team in CAPS

NEW ORLEANS (-7.5) Over Washington

The Saints received some encouraging news from an independent appeal panel, over turning the suspensions of four defensive players involved in “Bounty Gate”. Drew Brees will have even more responsibility this season without his play caller Sean Payton. Armed with a new mega contract, look for Brees to come out strong out of the gates. New Orleans is a perfect 3-0 at home following hurricanes that hit Louisiana (2002 Lilli, 2005 Katrina, 2008 Gustav), look for that trend to continue as ‘Nawlins spoils the debut of rookie Robert Griffin III.

Seattle (-2.5) Over ARIZONA

Rookie Russell Wilson has the entire league buzzing about his immense potential. After stealing the starting job away from Matt Flynn, Wilson turned heads in the preseason. Seattle’s workhorse back, Marshawn Lynch is questionable, which would be a huge loss for the squad. But with one of the best secondary’s in the league, look for the Seahawks defence to give John Skelton issues all day.

DETROIT (-7.5) Over St. Louis

Matthew Stafford + MegaTron + Home Opener = Blowout win. The Lions explosive offence will be too much to handle for new coach Jeff Fischer and the Rams. The crowd at Ford Field will be rocking, and with Ndamukong Suh chasing Sam Bradford around the field, it’s going to be a long day for St. Louis.

San Francisco (+5.5) Over GREEN BAY

This potential NFC Championship Game preview at Lambeau Field headlines the afternoon games in Week 1. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offence will score, even against the best defence in the league, which by the way is returning all of their starters from last year. But with some key additions (Manningham and Moss) look for the Niners to keep pace, they may not win, but I will take the points with this All-World defence.

NEW YORK JETS (-2.5) Over Buffalo

The Bills will have a much-improved defence this season with some key additions in Mario Williams and rookie Stephon Gilmore. But there is something about this Jets squad that intrigues me. Nobody really knows what role Tim Tebow will play in the offensive attack that scored just once in preseason. Former Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano definitely has some wildcat schemes up his sleeve that will keep the Bills defenders guessing all day. Also, the stingy Jets defence absolutely owned Ryan Fitzpatrick last year.
