Martin stars as Yankees defeat Blue Jays 11-4

New York's offence torches Blue Jays' bullpen

Rajai Davis went 4-for-4 but it wasn't enough for the Blue Jays to overcome the Yankees offensive outburst, as Toronto lost 11-4.

Russell Martin’s 20th home run of the season led the New York Yankees to 11-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.

The Toronto native’s three-run homer was part of a four-run sixth inning rally that sealed the game for the Yankees.

New York (91-66) jumped out to an early lead, as Nick Swisher had a two-RBI double in the first inning, scoring Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano.

Derek Jeter hit an RBI single in the second inning, putting the Yankees up 3-0.

Toronto (69-88) would start its scoring on Colby Rasmus’s solo shot in the fifth inning, his 23rd of the year. It was the centre fielder’s 23rd home run of the season.

Chad Jenkins (0-3) was pulled after 3 2/3 innings after allowing four hits, three earned runs while allowing three walks.

The rookie was part of an unusual play as the force of Curtis Granderson’s line out knocked Jenkins’ glove off of his hand. He then caught his glove with the ball trapped inside, ending the first inning.

Hiroki Kuroda (15-11) picked up the win, despite allowing ten hits through five innings.

After Martin’s round tripper, Ichiro Suzuki followed with an RBI single, extending New York’s lead to 7-1.

Martin became the fifth Yankees player to hit 20 or more home runs this season, joining Granderson, Cano, Swisher and Mark Teixeira.

Anthony Gose drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but New York’s lead proved to be insurmountable.

The Yankees would score again in the seventh inning, as Swisher scored again on a fielder’s choice.

Adam Lind responded by hitting a two-run home run, as the Jays fought valiantly to get back into the game.

It proved to be too little, too late as Cano singled home Suzuki in the eighth, and Eric Chavez hit a two-run blast in the ninth to put New York up 11-4.

Toronto’s bullpen was horrendous, as manager John Farrell used seven pitchers throughout the evening.

The six relievers allowed a combined eight earned runs, as Toronto could not quell a relentless Yankees attack.

Rajai Davis had a standout performance in the losing effort, going 4-for-4.

The Blue Jays’ inability to convert with runners in scoring position was crucial, converting only one of nine chances, and the team left 10 men stranded on base.

There were 25,785 fans were in attendance.
