Frontenacs last undefeated team: OHL roundup

A look back at the week that was in the Ontario Hockey League

It’s been 15 years since Kingston has started off the season 3-0 but after a perfect weekend, the Frontenacs have accomplished the feat again.

That was just one of the stories from the weekend that was in the Ontario Hockey League.

Kingston Frontenacs (3-0-0-0)

It may be early in the season but GM Doug Gilmour and head coach Todd Gill must be thrilled with the results so far in Kingston. The Frontenacs were outstanding on the weekend and remain the league’s only undefeated team after wins over the lowly Erie Otters in overtime and the defending Eastern Conference champion Niagara IceDogs. It’s the first time since the 1997-98 season that Kingston had won its first three games. The Frontenacs were led by OHL Player of the Week, Ryan Kujawinski, who had two goals and three assists. Joining Kujawinski was third-year winger Billy Jenkins, who potted a hat trick against Erie – the last tally tying the game with a little over seven minutes left in the third period. Kujawinski’s goal paved the way for Darcy Greenaway’s heroics in overtime.

London Knights (2-2-0-0)

After scoring 16 goals in their two games last weekend the Knights were snake bitten against Kitchener and Guelph this time around. Despite firing 88 shots on net, London was only able to score twice versus Rangers’ netminder John Gibson and the Storm’s Garret Sparks. Even the reliable Scott Harrington struggled defensively with a minus-2. Goaltender Kevin Bailie, Michael Houser’s replacement from Oshawa, didn’t help matters as he allowed five goals.

Sudbury Wolves (2-3-0-0)

After handing Oshawa it’s first, and currently only loss on the season in their home opener, the Wolves went winless on their Western Conference road trip. Sudbury allowed a gaudy 16 goals versus Saginaw, Plymouth, and Windsor. The Wolves never even held the lead at any point in their three losses. Though Joel Vienneau started every game, it’s unfair to lay all of the blame hard to put all the blame on the Wolves’ goaltender. The team allowed six power-play goals and has now given up a league-worst eight short-handed goals.

Brampton Battalion (1-2-0-1)

It was a hot and cold weekend for goaltender Matej Machovsky and the rest of his Battalion teammates. After shutting out Belleville and outplaying one of the league’s best goaltenders in Malcolm Subban on Friday night, the Czech Republic native was then pulled the following game against Oshawa in the first period. Machovsky was replaced by backup Jake Smith nine minutes into the game after allowing three goals on seven shots versus the Generals. Although Brampton was able to tie the game against Oshawa on the strength of three power-play goals, Smith and the young Battalion defence were unable to contain the league’s highest scoring offence, a unite that scored four consecutive goals in the third period for the victory.

Oshawa Generals (4-1-0-0)

The Generals were a perfect 3-0 on the weekend versus Peterborough, Belleville, and Brampton. Oashawa scored an impressive 17 goals and were led by league-leading scorer Boone Jenner. The Columbus Blue Jackets second-round pick in 2011 had four goals, four assists, and was a plus-10 on the weekend. Maple Leafs’ prospect Tyler Biggs also chipped in with four goals and added an assist for the Generals, who have now scored a league-high 24 goals, six more than the second highest total.
