Milos Raonic upset at Shanghai Masters

Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont.

Canada’s Milos Raonic has been upset in the second round of the Shanghai Masters, three days after reaching a new career high in the ATP Tour rankings.

Unseeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cypus defeated the No. 12 seed 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3) in men’s singles action early on Wednesday morning.

Raonic, of Thornhill, Ont., opened the tournament by beating Marinko Matosevic of Australia 7-6 (4), 6-3.

The 21-year-old served 15 aces against Baghdatis in a match that lasted 2:40.

On Sunday, Raonic moved up one spot into 14th on the ATP Tour rankings after reaching the final of the Japan Open where he lost in three sets to Japan’s Kei Nishikori.

Raonic ousted Andy Murray, the third ranked player in the world, at the Japan Open to advance to the finals in arguably the biggest win of his short career.
