Scarborough has its own little piece of cupcake heaven

In a little corner at 2060 Ellesmere Rd. sits a small cupcake specialty shop, the first of its kind in Scarborough.

So Into Cupcakes has been open for about a year with vanilla white and dark chocolate brown walls surrounding a white countertop that is usually overflowing with sweet, delicious and sometimes unusual cupcakes. But the cupcakes are not so simple themselves.

With interesting seasonal flavours like Pumpkin Spice made with real pumpkin and a deliciously light cinnamon-flavoured icing, Chocolate Orange, a mixture that holds a similarity in flavour to that of a Terry’s Chocolate Orange and Sweet Tooth which is a simple chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing and a combination of multiple candy pieces on top.

It can satisfy all your cupcake needs with something for the simple cupcake lovers as well with original vanilla and chocolate cupcakes.

Johnder Perez and his wife run the shop daily and all of the cupcakes are made in the store.

When asked about why they chose Scarborough as their store’s location Perez said he feels that it was about time the community got its own little cupcake shop.

“One thing is we actually live near here, it’s one of the things that influenced where we decided to open. There are a few bakeries that sell cupcakes, but our concept is to be the first cupcake specialty shop in Scarborough,” Perez said. “We wanted to open here not only because we live here but because we love Scarborough and because it’s something that wasn’t there to begin with.”

Perez said it was his wife’s love of baking and interest in opening a shop that got them started on this path.

“She was always interested in baking. Initially she wanted to do something with cookies, so she was experimenting with cookies,” Perez said. “One day she decided to try cupcakes. She would bake them and of course I’d help her. We would give them to family and friends who kept saying how great they were and they kept asking for more…One thing led to another and we opened up a shop.”

When asked about the process of baking the cupcakes, Perez said they are baked in store with fresh ingredients.

“For cupcakes it takes about two to four hours for a whole batch to be made,” Perez said. “We make them from scratch with real ingredients and I say that because we use real butter and no artificial ingredients whatsoever.”

Charnele Bryan, a Scarborough resident, said she is a lover of sweets and often frequents bakeries. She feels that cupcakes produced by So Into Cupcakes are well done.

“What I personally felt about the taste of the cupcakes were they carried a light flavour to them,” Bryan said. “The majority of the flavour comes from the toppings. They were sweet and all in all wonderful.”

Customer Aren Aynedjian also visits So Into Cupcakes with a few of his friends and said the atmosphere made him feel right at home.

“One of the things I liked about the place was the interior. When you first walk in, you’ll notice it’s nice and simple, easy on the eyes, no extreme colouring,” he said. “Kind of changes your mood to a calm and easygoing state. The cupcakes, at first I thought were a little too pricey, but when I took a bite it was delicious and I’m not one for sweets, definitely worth it.”

Chris Teixeira was there after a day at work to get something sweet. He said he wishes he could have tried them all.

“I thought it was good even though I’ve never been in any other cupcake place before,” Teixeira said. “What stood out for me were the name and the cupcakes of course! They were very good even though I couldn’t try them all, it made me think they were all probably amazing to taste.”
