Kachkar murder trial winds down

Jury to deliberate over fate of man charged with killing Toronto police officer

The trial of a man accused of murdering Toronto police Sgt. Ryan Russell is drawing to an end.

After the Crown and defense attorneys finished closing arguments in the trial of Richard Esber Kachkar on March 22, the judge directed the jury to deliberate over all the evidence.

Kachkar is accused of first-degree murder in Russell’s death. The defence lawyer argued Kachkar was suffering from a mental disorder at the time, but the Crown attorney insisted Kachkar did intend to kill Russell.

Russell, 35, a Scarborough resident, died when he tried to stop a stolen snowplow but was struck and killed.

The jury is expected to make a decision this week.
