Doug Ford charges John Tory is being dishonest with Toronto voters over Tory’s employment history.
Mayoral candidate Ford released a new ad attacking his opponent Tory’s business track record at a press conference Wednesday in Etobicoke. The ad focuses on Tory’s eight-year tenure on the director’s board of American telecom company, Charter Communications. It suggests Tory’s role with that company makes him a poor choice for Mayor.
“John may have been part of sinking the company but the people won’t stand by and let you sink our city,” the new ad for TV says.
Ford said Tory has not been honest with voters about serving on the board of Charter Communications when the company filed for bankruptcy in 2009.
“From 2001 to 2009, he sat on the board of Charter Communications,” Ford said. “He presided over one of the largest bankruptcies in U.S. history. It was an over $20-billion bankruptcy.”
A statement released by Tory’s campaign says the time he spent at Charter Communications is unrelated to the company filing for credit protection. The statement also criticized Ford’s campaign.
“These sort of U.S.-style Tea Party smears and tactics have no place in Toronto politics,” Tory said in the statement. “I can’t say that I am surprised. Doug Ford has no credible plan, whether on transit or on any other issue to bring forward. The only thing left is for Doug to throw mud and see what sticks.”
