Toronto’s fastest Internet coming to new waterfront communities

Fibre-optic network gives residents speeds of 500 megabytes per second

Toronto’s new waterfront communities will able to enjoy the fastest broadband internet in the city. Waterfront Toronto and Beanfield Metroconnect announced Monday that Waterfront neighbourhoods and businesses will be provided with one of the highest performance internet services in the nation. Subscribers will have access to unlimited 500 megabit per second downloading and uploading speed, which is fast enough to download an entire movie in under a minute.

The fibre-optic network package is 60 dollars and is included in the resident’s monthly condo fees. There will also be neighborhood-wide WiFi, where internet is accessible outside the home. Beanfield is bound by contract to not increase the price of the package for 10 years, starting as soon as residents move in.

According to Waterfront Toronto, President and CEO John Campbell says that that the new Internet service is a “game-changer” in Toronto.

“With more than enough band-width to allow workers and entrepreneurs in date-intensive industries, such as film, entertainment, and industrial design to create and collaborate from the comfort of their homes,” said Campbell, “This will help us establish a new innovation hub and stimulate enduring economic growth to help Toronto remain competitive with other world-leading cities.”

Andy Bai is a real-estate investor in Southern Ontario and travels from China to Canada every couple of months for business. He says he had purchased one of the River City 2 condos in the West Don Lands after its initial launch in 2011.

“I think it will be a pleasant community to live in. It reminds me of the condo communities back in China where everyone comes out after dinner just to walk around the neighbourhood with their partners and dogs,” said Bai, “Now with Internet outside the home, I think it will appeal even more people to go out of their homes and breathe in the fresh air. Especially young people.”

Waterfront Toronto was created with funding from the Governments of Canada, Ontario, and the City of Toronto to revitalize Toronto’s waterfront.

The new waterfront communities will be located at East Bayfront and West Don Lands. Occupancy starts in 2015.
