John Campbell edges out opponents to claim Ward 4

Etobicoke Centre chooses a new councillor

Cheers rang out at the Longest Yard, a restaurant in Etobicoke Centre, as election results came in. With victory secured, John Campbell, the new councillor of Ward 4, celebrated with close friends, family and volunteers.

The former chair of the Toronto District School Board beat out his opponents for councillor, winning with 8,227 votes. Niels Christensen followed with 6,847 votes and Angelo Carnevale finished third with 4,968.

In 2010, Campbell came close to replacing former incumbent Gloria Lindsay Luby as Ward 4 councillor, but with almost 30 years in public office, Luby hung onto the seat.

This time around laughter and exuberance surrounded Campbell as he answered congratulatory phone calls and text messages in his familiar cool and calm demeanour.

“Well the results are in,” Campbell said. “I am absolutely thrilled with tonight’s results and I’m going to be celebrating here with my volunteers.”

With a new face representing Ward 4, Campbell supporters are eager to see a change.

University student and Campbell volunteer, Kim Babiar, commented on Campbell’s victory.

“I am looking forward to seeing him represent Ward 4, he is a proven leader and I wish him the best.”
