Wind gusts rip through GTA causing power outages in west end

2,000 still without power

A severe windstorm that toppled trees and downed power lines left thousands without power in the GTA Monday night.

Gusts topped 100 km/hr in some locations, Toronto Police issued a warning, cautioning the public to avoid traveling during the severe weather.

Tanya Bruckmueller-Wilson, the media representative for Hydro One, said that at its peak over 10,000 customers were effected, mostly in the west end of Toronto.

“Yes, this was a severe outage but we are currently restoring power to those still affected,” Bruckmueller-Wilson said. “There are around 2,000 customers left without power but half of those will be restored by the end of the day with the rest worked on at a case by case basis.”

Bruckmueller-Wilson also stressed that safety is Hydro One’s top priority.

“If there are any wires down, stay clear and let Toronto Hydro know as soon as possible,” she said.
