Toronto-Danforth MP Craig Scott is running for re-election.
MP Craig Scott has been given the nod by the NDP riding association in Toronto-Danforth to run for re-election.
Noting the possibility of an early election, the association nominated him on Saturday.
“Toronto-Danforth is a flagship for the NDP and it’s a riding that kind of anchors Toronto,” Scott said.
About 200 party members were at the nomination meeting and Scott, a former law professor at Osgoode Hall, said he was overwhelmed with the support he received.
“There has been a gradual but steady transition with Jack [Layton] having laid the ground that I have been building on,” Scott said.
Layton, who was the federal opposition leader for the NDP, was held in high esteem in the community of the Toronto-Danforth.
Scott became MP for the area after winning a by-election in March 2012 after Layton’s death.
“It’s a riding where there’s a lot of leadership within the riding itself,” Scott said. “It isn’t just from me but from within the community too.”
Scott said it was for this reason that current NDP leader Tom Mulcair visited a daycare centre within the Toronto-Danforth area on Tuesday.
“It is another indicator that we know that this is where people listen,” Scott said.
