Bell’s Let’s Talk campaign is a record breaker

$6.1 million raised for mental health on Jan. 28

Early numbers show Bell’s mental health campaign had another record breaking year.

The fifth annual “Lets Talk” campaign raised money nation wide in support of mental health on Jan. 28. Bell Canada donated five cents for every text message, local or long distance call, tweet using the hashtag #BellLetsTalk and sharing the campaign photo on Facebook.

In 2013 the campaign raised $4.8 million. In 2014, it grew to $5.5 million. This year 122 million interactions resulted in $6.1 million, easily surpassing previous numbers.

“We’ve made so much progress with Bell Let’s Talk and the mental health movement over the past 5 years,” spokesperson and Olympian Clara Hughes said in a press release. “There’s much more to do to fight the stigma and help people get the help they need.”

The funds raised this year will provide grants to organizations to improve access to programs and support people with mental illness. The grants will range from $5,000 to $50,000.

Hughes said she was shocked by the outpouring of support.

“Wow! Thank you everyone, everywhere. I am just in awe at your incredible support for the people in our lives and all around us who struggle with mental illness.”

Including the original $50 million donated by Bell in 2010, the Let’s Talk campaign has raised more than $70 million for mental health awareness in Canada.
