Becca Meyers has a stellar performance at the 2015 Can Am Para-swimming Championships

American Paralympic swimmer is excited and confident about breaking more world records

Becca Meyers demonstrated last night why she is considered a top contender for the 2015 Parapan Am Games and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The American exceeded her time expectations in the Can Am Para-swimming Championships in the finals of the 400 metre Freestyle by shaving five seconds from her morning time to win the race in 4:33.29.

Then, In her third race of day two, she finished first and swam 28.81 in the 50 metre Freestyle S13,

¨I was not expecting winning my third race of the night, I was surprised to do that time after swimming two races before that, It got me excited to see what I can do in future races when I am focusing on winning¨, said Meyers.

In the first two days of the championships, the 20-year-old finished in first place in the 400 Metre Freestyle, 100 Metre Butterfly, 200 Metre Individual Medley and 50 Metre Freestyle and came in second at 100 Metre Breaststroke.

¨I feel pretty good and happy after making great times in all of my races so far,” said Meyers.

Visually impaired swimmers compete in the sport classes 11-13, with 11 meaning a complete or nearly complete loss of sight and 13 describing the minimum eligible visual impairment, Meyers competes in class 13 .

The Maryland native was born profoundly deaf and afflicted with Usher syndrome, a common condition affecting hearing, balance and vision, often causing night-blindness and a loss of peripheral vision through progressive degeneration of the retina.

Her impairments have not stopped her from breaking world records, at the 2014 Para Pan Pac Championships, Meyers swam a 2:26.86 in the S13 women’s 200 IM, breaking the 2:27.64 that Canadian Valerie Grand-Maison swam at the Paralympic Games.

Meyers was accepted last year to Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and is part of the school swimming team, ¨The Lady Dips, she is looking forward to going back to college next fall.

¨I have been doing good in school so far, currently I am in a leave of absence right now because I am in the process of getting a guide dog,¨ said Meyers.

After concluding her participation in the Can Am championships today,the two-time Olympic medalist is going to participate in the 2015 German Open taking place between April 13 – 20 in Berlin.
