Metal detectors coming to ACC next season

The Air Canada Centre plans to tighten up security next season with the installation of new metal detectors.

“It will become mandatory next year that all national basketball and hockey teams to have metal detectors for their venues,” a representative for Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) said.

The Toronto Blue Jays made a similar move this season after the Major League Baseball approved a new security policy.

Like the Blue Jays, MLSE will soon follow suit. Fans will be allowed to keep their belts, shoes and watches on, as well as loose change. But, cellphones and other metal objects must be placed in a basket before entering the scanner.

So far, fans seem to accept the tighter security.

“I don’t mind that they’re installing metal detectors,” Toronto Raptors fan Ryan Villadar said. “It might mean longer wait times to enter the arena but you know you’re going to be safe.”
