NDP’s Casselman ‘proud’ of campaign despite loss

Liberals take Scarborough-Guildwood

Despite finishing a distant third in Scarborough-Guildwood, NDP candidate Laura Casselman still believes in her priorities and says she would not alter them if she runs again.

“Our priorities have not changed and we have to continue to fight for them. We are still dedicated to issues that are very relevant – equality, fighting for better wages, transit. Those are still the core of what we stand for,” Casselman said.

“I’m very proud of the campaign we ran; we maintained a competitive campaign,” she said.

Angela Zhu, Scarborough-Guildwood NDP campaign manager, said she is “proud” of the work done to reach voters across the riding.

“We feel the campaign went well … people were delighted to see the candidate,” Zhu said.

Liberal John McKay captured 60 per cent of the vote in Scarborough-Guildwood and was re-elected for a fifth term as MP. He finished ahead of Conservative Chuck Konkel who collected 26.5 per cent, followed by Casselman with just more than 11.3 per cent.

The Liberal party and leader Justin Trudeau, the prime minister-designate, appealed to a range of voters.

“In Sri Lanka I didn’t vote and I’ve been here 30 years and I haven’t voted. Justin Trudeau gave me what I need to hear,” said Liberal voter, Conelia Decroos, 50.

LlewellynWinter, 65, also voted for his Liberal candidate and, by extension, Trudeau.

“I voted for his dad (former prime minister Pierre Trudeau) the first time I came to Canada and now I’m voting for him,” Winter said.

Winter’s wife, Jaseth, also 65, added, “I thought he is worth voting for. Like father like son.”
