The installation of community mailboxes in Canada is to be suspended until further notice.
According to Canada Post, the program meant to convert door-to-door mail delivery to communal mailboxes will be temporarily halted.
“We will work collaboratively with the Government of Canada to determine the best path forward given the ongoing challenges faced by the Canadian postal system,” the Crown corporation said in an e-mailed statement on Oct. 26. “Efforts are now underway to place the comprehensive program on hold in an orderly fashion.”
This means the conversion to a community mailbox for almost half of a million addresses across the country will be halted.
Customers affected by this decision will receive a letter in the next few weeks notifying them on the status of their mail delivery service.
Residents of neighbourhoods where community mailboxes have already been installed will still have to pick up their mail and parcels from their designated boxes.
