17 crashes before rush hour on first day of icy roads

Police overwhelmed by collisions across Toronto

Toronto police are responding to multiple reports of collisions across Toronto on Nov. 24 due to the cold weather and wet, icy roads. Police reported 17 collisions before the evening rush hour.

The earliest reported crash was at 6 a.m., when a male pedestrian in his 20s was reported dead after a hit-and-run near McCowan Road and Kenhatch Boulevard.

Due to the large number of incidents, police released a public safety alert through Twitter, warning citizens of the dangerous conditions: “Wet roads and cold air have caused some roads and bridges to form ice…drive with caution”

Here are the collisions reported by the Toronto Police Operation Centre on Nov. 24 between 6 a.m and 6 p.m.:

1. Pedestrian struck, driver failed to remain near McCowan Road and Kenhatch Boulevard.
2. Seven car collision near Kingston Road and Hwy. 401
3. Two vehicles, head on, Bloor Street (Prince Edward Viaduct) over DVP.
4. Single vehicle crashes into basement of house near Bellamy and Lawrence avenues.
5. Two vehicles spin out, hit guardrail at St Clair and Avoca avenues.
6. Eight-car collision on iced-over bridge at Morningside Drive and Ellesmere Avenue.
7. Three-car collision, one car flipped over at Victoria Park and Belmore avenues.
8. Single-vehicle crashes into pole and knocks down wires at Kingston and Manse roads.
9. Two-car collision at Don Valley Parkway and Lawrence Avenue.
10. Child struck by car at Midland and Dorcot avenues.
11. Car crashes into a bus shelter at McNicoll Avenue and Silver Spring Boulevard.
12. Collision that caused vehicle to catch fire at Finch Avenue and Milliken Boulevard.
13. Two vehicles collide at Pharmacy Avenue and Gordon Baker Road.
14. Bus and two vehicles collide in the area of Martin Grove Road and Finch Avenue.
15. Two car collision University Avenue and Dundas Street.
16. Two car collision on Don Valley Parkway south of York Mills Road.
17. Cyclist struck near Lakeshore Boulevard and Carlaw Avenue.
