Drake named Spotify’s most-streamed artist of 2015

Canadians dominate list of popular artists on the streaming service

And the award for the world’s most streamed artist of the year goes to Toronto’s very own Drake.

Spotify, the music streaming service, released a list of its most streamed artists this week. Drake and other Canadian musicians dominated the list.

Drake topped the list with 1.8 billion streams and more than 45 million listeners, with Ed Sheeran, Scarborough native The Weeknd, Maroon 5, and Kanye West trailing behind.

Despite falling short of the top five most streamed artists, Canadian Justin Bieber broke the record for the most streams in a single day. He received 36 million plays on Nov. 13, when his new album Purpose debuted.

It is just one of many records Bieber has broken this year. The pop star broke the previous record for songs currently on the Billboard Hot 100 with 17, besting the previous mark set by The Beatles and Drake. On top of that his show at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto on Dec. 7, was sold out in less than a minute.

Other Canadian musicians making waves in the industry are Shawn Mendes, Alessia Cara and Hedley. The music streaming service also shows evidence that the Canadian stars of the 1990s — Shania Twain, Celine Dion and Alanis Morrissette — are still fancied by listeners internationally.
