About 2,000 Toronto taxi drivers took to Queen and Bay Streets Wednesday to protest against Uber. The protest began mid-afternoon and lasted until about 7:30 p.m. after Mayor John Tory’s plea to end the protest. Cabbies finally agreed to disperse after Toronto Police Chief, Mark Saunders, promised to meet with the taxi industry on Friday later this week.

“I’m so annoyed. I was supposed to be at work over an hour ago. They’re so inconsiderate,” said Marilyn Williams, a downtown commuter. “It’s not fair to inconvenience everyone else.”

The cab drivers are asking for Uber to be shut down completely for illegally taking their business.

Mohamed Ahmed, a cab driver for over five years, said he has had enough.

“We can’t stay silent anymore. This is affecting the way we provide for our families,” Ahmed said.

The meeting with Chief Saunders is said to take place Friday around noon.
