Toronto police have disclosed the name of the man who was shot five times less than a block from one of Toronto’s busiest intersections.

The victim has been identified as Gabriel Nikov, 18. A woman, who recognized him from her neighbourhood and said she knew him as “T,” was at Yonge and Bloor on Wednesday night when the shooting happened. She tried to save his life before he was taken to the hospital and declared dead, police said.

Nikov was a student at Central Toronto Academy, the Toronto District School Board and police say he was the intended target.

“A man was arrested at the scene,” Constable Victor Kwong said. “However, he was after released with no charges.”

Witnesses said the victim was the one to approach the three suspects. Police still seek assistance identifying them.

Anyone with information is asked to come forward and contact police at 416-808-5300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
