Math error takes TFC out of playoffs

Reds needed second-half comeback to secure draw against New York

For 24 hours Toronto FC thought they had clinched their second playoff berth in franchise history, until it was announced that a math error was to blame for the confusion.

A second half brace from Toronto FC striker, Jozy Altidore, was needed for Toronto FC to complete the comeback and draw the New York Red Bulls 3-3 on Sunday.

Toronto FC did have a chance to clinch a postseason spot, but needed a win over New York, instead of the draw they got, according to MLS’s website.

With the draw, TFC now sits at the top of the Eastern Conference table and are closer to clinching a playoff spot for the second consecutive year.

After going down 2-0 early in the match, Altidore was happy the team was able to respond and get an important result.

“We didn’t start the sharpest,” Altidore said. “I thought the character was great, to stay in this game, to come back, to get a good point in the end I thought showed a lot of guts.”

Toronto manager, Greg Vanney, echoed the sentiments of his star striker, but made clear that neither himself nor the team were satisfied with how they played.

“I am very proud of the character of this group to fight back,” Vanney said. “All things being said, we will take [the result]…but it wasn’t what we set out for.”

TFC used Sunday’s game to get an early look at a possible playoff.

“It was a good dry run for us, because it may be a team we face down the road again,” Altidore said.

Toronto FC will have an opportunity to clinch a spot in the playoffs with a win against Philadelphia on Saturday, barring any other math errors.
