Cheeky designs win condom contest

Public Health unveils new Toronto-themed prophylactics

Toronto residents will have four new package designs to choose from when they pick up a free condom at their local sexual health clinic.

The contest that challenged local designers to create a Toronto-themed condom wrapper came to a close Tuesday night as Toronto Public Health (TPH) announced its top designs. The contest is part of CondomTO, a TPH program that distributes free custom designed prophylactics.

The winners in both student and open categories boasted some cheeky creations.

Dr. Barbara Yaffe Toronto’s acting medical officer of health said the contest was about promotion.

“Sexual health is a key part of good health and the more we can get people thinking about this topic, the more we can work together to improve the health of residents,” Yaffe said in a statement.

The winner in the student category was Andrea Por, an advertising and graphic design student at Humber College. She designed her wrapper after a TTC bus transfer, displaying day 69, of course. The winner of the open category was Diane Adams who conveyed a simple message to those lining their pockets with the free raincoats: put it on.

Runner-ups included a lumberjack themed design and yet another design featuring a TTC innuendo.

The contest was sponsored by Miami Add School Toronto and by ONE® Condoms, who have also utilized creative packaging. Providing the design for the physical wrappers is The&Partnership Canada.

Previously, CondomTO handed out themed condoms for World Pride and the Pan Am games. The new Toronto condom designs will be available at TPH’s sexual health clinics in 2017 and likely won’t be the last time the city gets creative in this area.
