OHL 2017-18 Season Preview: Eastern Conference

The Bobby Orr Trophy is up for grabs again this year, and there are several teams vying for the crown

Kingston Frontenacs

Division: East

Coach: Jay Varady

2016-17 Record: 33-26-9

Key Additions:

Bryan Laureigh (LW, Shattuck St. Mary’s), Cody Morgan (C, OHL Priority Selection), Paul Larabie (C, Nepean Raiders), Evan Brand (D, OHL Priority Selection)

Key Departures:

Stephen Desrocher, Warren Foegele, Sam Harding, Cody Caron

Top Players:

Jason Robertson (RW) – 68 GP / 42 G / 39 A / 81 Pts / 29 PIM / +3

Linus Nyman (LW) – 68 GP / 26 G / 24 A / 50 Pts / 14 PIM / +4

Eemeli Rasanen (D) – 66 GP / 6 G / 33 A / 39 Pts / 41 PIM / -7

Jeremy Helvig (G) – 59 GP / 2.72 GAA / .907 Sv% / 6 Shutouts

The offence of Kingston will be led by Robertson. The 2017 Dallas Stars second rounder was the team leader in points by a large margin and will likely see himself at the top again.

He will be aided by Cody Morgan, the 12th overall pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection. He should have the chance to play on one of the top lines as the Frontenacs don’t have as much centre depth as other teams in the conference.

Eemeli Rasanen will anchor the back end this season. The Finnish defender stands at 6-foot-6 and is coming off his first training camp with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He’s got a big shot and can throw his weight around. Look for him to be the focal point on a defensive unit that only features one rookie.

Finally, Helvig will assume the starters role again this season, He is a big-bodied goaltender, who will be looking to improve on his save percentage from last season, which almost dipped below .900. He will carry the workload, but

The Fronts finished fourth in the Eastern Conference last season and should see themselves in a similar spot this season.
