Charlie Kurtenbach finds success after moving to top Saint Leo line

Vancouver native, now a junior, one of the cogs in lacrosse team's machine

Lacrosse attackman Charlie Kurdenbach showcases his technique on the lacrosse field at St. Leo's. He has become an integral part of the Lions' offense this season.

ST. LEO, Fla. — Saint Leo’s attackman Charlie Kurtenbach is working on a breakout junior season and so far it’s been a success.

The Saint Leo’s veteran has posted 15 goals through his first five games, on a line with Kyle Pauwels and Jake Gilmour that has been dominant during that stretch, combing for 43 goals and 65 points so far in 2018.

Lions have posted a 4-1 record and have high hopes of qualifying for the NCAA tournament.

“I think just getting a year of starting under my belt as a sophomore has definitely helped because this year I have more experience.” Kurtenbach said, as he stood near the centre line of the Saint Leo’s lacrosse field.

“I’m more confident that I can win my matchups against defenders. Playing on my attack line with Jake and Kyle, those guys are unbelievable and can get you the ball in the right spots.”

Kurtenbach earned a spot on the top line after a 37 point sophomore season.

As important as it is to work with linemates, it’s also crucial to set personal goals going into a new season. Kurtenbach has some ideas about aspects of his game that could use improvement.

“I’d just like to be a larger portion of our offense and to be a little more involved in what we’re doing.” he said. “But honestly, it all comes down to what the team’s doing and I think we’ve come together as a unit really well.

“I think I could definitely cut down on the turnovers. I end up having the ball on my stick a lot and sometimes under the pressure they can take the ball from me.”

It was actually a former player who convinced him to attend the school.

“One of my good friends, Carter Dickson, who I had lived with in Canada while playing box lacrosse, was committed here, so he had a big influence on that.” he said.
