From Oakwood, Ontario to the shores of Normandy

When mayoral candidate Sarah Thomson walked into her campaign office last Sept. 9, she was greeted by a sometimes uncommon sight – reporters ready and waiting. “We became accustomed to the fact that every time I had a press announcement, the press wouldn’t cover it,” Thomson said. But the reporters’ presence that day was bittersweet. Thomson was about to drop out of the running for mayor of Toronto. According to Thomson, the room was so silent you could hear a pin drop.
It was 10 years ago, during a visit to South Korea, where Vanessa Lee’s life changed. Lee, 16, was there visiting her family and friends. The family planned to see some attractions, but Typhoon Megi swept through part of the country, forcing Lee and her family to take shelter in their small home, in front of their tiny TV. So, they watched the Olympics in Athens. Archery was on. Korea’s own Park Sung-hyun was competing. “She was just so cool and composed under pressure that I was like, ‘I want to be like her,’” Lee said. “So I stopped spending all the money my parents gave me to spend on the trip, and I said ‘I’m coming home and I’m buying a bow.’”
Sasse has recently come home after a year in France. Now that she’s back, she’ll experience being the new kid again at her high school. It’s a fictional story playing out in a video game world, but the sorts of things teenage Sasse might face — bullying, romance, learning about boundaries and consent, coming to terms with one’s sexuality — are rooted in reality.
She’s Canadian, has the ability to melt steel, read minds, turn invisible, and travel on a ray of Northern Lights, and you’ve probably never heard of her. Her name is Nelvana of the Northern Lights and she was a star of the Golden Age of comic books of the 1940s.
