Refugees in many cases are forced to flee from war-torn countries, escaping the horror and destruction caused by warfare. The Observer sat down with two Canadian refugees to talk about the struggles they faced when they first arrived in the country they now call home.
Picketers marched to Queen’s Park Wednesday March 4, 2015 to drum up support for their labour dispute with York and the University of Toronto. But as Observer Television News’ Veronica Agudelo reports, some students worry the strike will cost them their semester.
The audience heard that the number of foreign students on F-1 visas in U.S. colleges and universities grew from 110,000 in 2001 to 524,000 in 2012. Forty-five percent of foreign student graduates extended their visas to work in the same metropolitan area as their college or university.
In March of this year, Luz Marina Ortiz revisited perhaps the most traumatic moment of her adult life. Participating in a workshop about human rights, she hung a shirt in an otherwise empty closet and snapped a still photograph.
“It represents the absence of my husband,” she said.
