The flood caused such serious damage that major renovations are required, and the estimated time for the repairs is four months. As you might expect, the units are uninhabitable in the meantime — and so the bottom line is that tenants were rendered virtually homeless about a month before this holiday season.

So only a few years after construction stops on Pape’s current renovation project, the drill may have to come out again as an even bigger overhaul with a new subway tunnel and platforms looms. One can’t help but wonder why the two projects could not have been better coordinated to save the taxpayer valuable funds for redundant drilling and the neighbours a few more of their nerves.

StreetARToronto aims to beautify city, reduce vandalism

Street artist Angel Carillo, whose work is pictured, says he's excited that the new StreetARToronto program may inspire illegal taggers to become legal graffiti artists.

Toronto will be getting a new paint job starting this summer. The city’s new StreetARToronto (StART) program is aiming to put up wall murals to add flavour and character to many of its neighbourhoods. These may be done as graffiti, stencil, mosaic, projections or other techniques.

Scarborough has seen a shift from violent crimes towards theft and robberies in the early months of 2012. Crime statistics for the beginning of 2012 showed a 17 to 23 per cent decline of violent crimes like murder, assault, and sexual assault compared to numbers from early 2011.
