Church home to musical treasure

Behind a ceiling to floor screen on either side of the altar at the Metropolitan United Church in Toronto sits a unique piece of history. It’s 80 years old. It’s the largest artifact of its kind in Canada. And Dr. Patricia Wright knows it intimately. “It sounds wonderfully well with English music,” she said. “It has orchestra soundings stops, solo stops, and strings and flutes.”

Ryerson student Hanny Sierra thought all she needed to worry about in her third year graphic communications program was grades. “Given that so much attention has been brought to the issue, it is definitely concerning to think that safety is just one more thing Ryerson students have to worry about,” Sierra said.

Head shots changing the face of women’s hockey

Karolina Urban remembers most of the game. It was the last of her 2008-09 season. As captain of the University of Toronto women’s hockey team, she followed the puck on the ice. “The puck popped out and I got it,” she said. “The girl … just smoked me so hard that I twisted in the air before I landed.” That was Urban’s first concussion. She has suffered two since. They haven’t discouraged her.

Some of Toronto’s best minds in particle physics are hoping 2012 will be the year they achieve a big bang of their own, including a potential Nobel Prize in physics. The physicists, from the University of Toronto and York University, have a shot at discovering one of science’s Holy Grails, the Higgs boson – also known as the “God particle”.

Lecturers tread carefully amid sensitive subjects

Prof. Cameron Johnston’s class of nearly 500 social sciences students assembled in the York University lecture hall. He delivered his introductory lecture titled Self, Culture and Society. The day started out like most others, but it soon took an unexpected turn. Sarah Grunfeld, as reported by Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star, heard the professor say the words,“All Jews should be sterilized,” Johnston said.
