Warriors go down fighting

The West Hill Warriors senior girls basketball team were 5 points away from an impressive double digit comeback in the second half of their game against the Cedarbrae Colts on Oct 9. After the 35-30 loss, the girls fell to 0-3 for the season.

It took West Hill two full quarters to find their footing on the road against the Cedarbrae Colts and by then it was too late.

The result was a 35-30 loss by the senior girls basketball team on Oct. 9 that left the Warriors at 0-3.

Shaniqua Wilson led the way for the Colts, finishing with 21 points. That, combined with sloppy passes and far too many turnovers, led to the defeat.

Change of attack

Already down by double digits after the first half, coach Matt Sturgeon decided to switch to a man-on-man defence – something he said the team has been toying with recently. “They were throwing the ball away, because they weren’t expecting that sort of pressure,” he said. “At one point they coughed up the ball four times in a row.”

The Colts took advantage at almost every turn and quickly pulled away. Trouble executing inside the paint was another of West Hill’s downfalls. On the defensive end, the team faired well using a basic zone, forcing turnovers and narrowing the margin to just two points as the minutes wound down.

But with 1:45 left, Wilson sank one of her four shots from beyond the three-point arc and ended the Warriors’ run. “We had a [strong] comeback, but fell short,” Sturgeon said.

Fifth year captain Kamoy Francis led the Warriors with 10 points, and Sturgeon credited guard Sally Asante and small forward Grace Kusi with helping to shut down Wilson in the second half.

The Warriors travel to Birchmount Collegiate on Oct. 22 for their next game.
