Murder at Mornelle

Emergency Task Force at 90 Mornelle Court

Police let in residents after the Emergency Task Force
swept through 90 Mornelle Court at Morningside
and Ellesmere.

A local mother was in her Mornelle Court apartment on Wednesday afternoon when “about two” shots rang out somewhere in the building.

Her children, aged eight and 10, told her to ignore it.

Those shots turned out to be a murder — one victim, one suspect and at least an hour spent outside of the building while the Emergency Task Force swept the building.

“They just said ‘Ignore it mom just go in and watch the TV shows,’ ” said Kim, who did not want her last name identified. “They’ve been told to look away, don’t look into it.”

At about 3:15 p.m. residents in the apartment called police from 43 Division to report the sound of gunshots on the seventh floor of the 12-floor public housing building.

Inside an apartment on seven, officers discovered the lifeless body of a male who had “obvious gunshot wounds,” said Detective Sergeant Savas Kyriacou, six hours after the initial call.

A person was taken into custody, although Kryiacou could not confirm his or her involvement in the case or the age and identity of the victim.

But earlier in the afternoon, police sources said the male was in his early 20s. They are appealing for witnesses and say they are getting good cooperation so far.

Schools had just let their students out when the shots were heard.

“That’s why we had a high police presence in the area to secure the safety of the students and residents in the area,” said Duty Sergeant Greg Mclane, who added a suspect was seen running from the area.

ETF swept the apartment as residents waited in a TTC bus outside.

It was after 3 p.m. when Kim and her two kids heard what sounded like “moving furniture.”

“All the time, through the building someone has a dispute with someone else they pull out a gun, they don’t talk anymore,” Kim said. “I’ve been here two years now, and I want out of here so bad.”
