Just For Kicks

Sunday mornings at West Hill High School usually mean empty hallways and locked gyms.

That’s all changed since the Just For Kicks Soccer Camps began using the school for their Spring Fever camp.

The gym is packed full of parents cheering on future David Beckham’s and Mia Hamm’s as they work though a series of drills.

Spring Fever runs every Sunday from West Hill and David and Mary Thompson High Schools from now to May 11 for ages 4-14.

“It’s a non-competitive atmosphere for the kids to learn a bit of soccer,” says the president of the club, Nick Voronka. “We teach them some ball control and the older kids, we’ll teach them some tactics and playmaking.”

Camp goers learn the beautiful game though practical drills and scrimmages as well as a video night where they watch professional soccer players, which Voronka says is intended to inspire camp goers to want to improve their skills.

Nathan Uwimana aspires to someday play like his heroes David Beckham and Pele. The wide eyed 8-year-old, dreams that one day he too will be a professional soccer player.

He’s hoping Just For Kicks will teach him the basic skills of soccer to help him achieve his goal.

“My favourite part is that even if you lose you play as a team and you tried,” Uwimana says while watching his friends play in a scrimmage.

Those sentiments are echoed by his campmate Tresen Frail, an 8-year-old David Beckham fan who has learned much more than just the fundamentals of soccer in his time at the camp.

“We get to work together and that everyone gets to have fun and learn about sportsmanship,” Frail says.

These young players are hoping to take the skills that they pick up in camp to an organized team in the Just For Kicks’ house soccer league. The league is for players ages 3 to 18 of all skill levels and it runs from May to September.

Registration for the 2008 summer season has already begun. The games will be played out of 9 locations across Scarborough including Woburn and West Hill.
