Election 2008: Silva holds Toronto Davenport

The re-elected Davenport Liberal MP has made cities his top priority when he returns to the House of Commons in Ottawa.

Mario Silva scooped up his third victory in four years in the Toronto Davenport riding. He maintained a 46-year tradition of Liberal power in the constituency. Despite a Conservative minority government nationally Silva is confident the Liberals can keep cities on the agenda.

“Toronto has rejected the Conservative message over and over again because they don’t want anything to do with our city,” he said.  “They have neglected our city, our infrastructure … We need people like myself and members of Parliament from Toronto to be the voice of Toronto at the federal level.”

With the 2008 polls bringing in the lowest popular vote in Liberal history, Silva acknowledges the struggles ahead.

“It’s a bitter sweet victory, yes. We have won here in Davenport. We have not won nationally. There is a lot of work to be done” Silva said.
