Blood spills over an iphone

Police have arrested two teenagers after a third was stabbed for refusing to hand over his Apple iPhone on Tuesday night.

The incident happened at about 8:30 p.m. just outside of the victim’s home on Overture Road near Kingston Road and Lawrence Avenue.

“All three parties involved knew each other,” said Constable Wendy Drummond of Toronto Police Services. “It all started as an argument over the iPhone on the street outside the victim’s home, that continued into the house.”

Drummond says the teen incurred non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital.

The two robbers, an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old, were arrested minutes later on Galloway Road.

“Theft of iPods and cellphones appear to be on the rise at an elevated rate from the past, Drummond said. “We find this happens when new technology is in high demand.

“It’s all about education and preventing yourself from being a targeted victim, but no one should feel like they can’t walk the streets listening to music.”

Keshautini Misir works and lives in the area of the stabbing and saw the emergency vehicles drive down Overture Road while she was working.

“I’ve heard about the iPod thefts happening more in high schools, but I’m not afraid to listen to my MP3 [player] walking down the street,” she said.

In the week prior to this stabbing, police say they have arrested nine teenagers after five people were robbed and physically assaulted when people attempted to steal iPods and cellphones.

Raihan Haider often walks down Overture Road when he gets off the bus to come home from school. Like Misir, Haider also frequently listens to his iPod while walking on sidewalks.

“I’m kind of scared, but I’m more scared for my friends who sometimes walk alone at night,” Haider said. “I just walk in the day and we hear about the robberies happening at night, so I’m not so afraid.”
