Pickering gives back to its citizens

With the Oscar nominations around the corner, awards season is certainly in. However, in some places, not all awards are given out to celebrities. Some are given out to normal citizens, who are doing far more than entertaining.

The Pickering Civic Awards is an annual event where the city gives back to those who have served it. It honours people or groups who have done exceptional things for the community.

The goal of the awards, as stated in a press release from the city, is to show that it “acknowledges the important contribution that individuals and organizations make to build a strong community.”

Nomination forms are being circulated both online and at city buildings and are to be submitted by Feb. 12. The winners are to be awarded at a later, unannounced date.

Citizens nominate those people or groups who should be recgonized for their achievements.

The winners are then picked by a committee, and are given the awards by Mayor Dave Ryan in a ceremony at the Council Chambers.

The awards themselves contain 17 different categories, such as heroics, charity, sports, and business. A number of the awards are specifically meant for youth achievements.

The nomination forms are available online,  as is the official press release, with the full list of categories.
